Do you have any recommendations for books on English history, particularly the transition from the divided kingdoms to the united England? I've struggled to find one resource on this.

I'm interpreting this question as your asking for a one-volume treatment of Anglo-Saxon history. If not, please correct me. The Anglo-Saxon period is not my specialty, but I've heard good things about Robin Fleming's "Britain after Rome." Of course, there's always the first volume of David Hume's history. Hollister's "The Making of England to 1399" is pretty good on the Anglo-Saxon period, but I'd try to find an older edition of it since books like tend to degrade over time as other editors take over and try to make them trendy.
